Amazon now implements a system called Amazon Renewed.

Before this program, you were able to list the condition of the product as refurbished.

If you are unaware of what the term refurbished means: it is a used product, but anything that was damaged / broken has been repaired with new parts to make it run as if it was new. If it is not actually new, Amazon’s policy does not allow you to classify it as such.

Recently, we had an Amazon seller come to us who was in this exact predicament; they received a suspension because of the condition of the products they were selling. We navigated Amazon’s policies, trying to figure out if the device our client builds does in fact constitute a refurbished item.

It turns out that every part is new; the tower is a custom-built PC. The problem was that the name of his store was “…” something involving refurbished. (Attorney-client confidentiality does not permit us to release the actual name of the store.)

Our client was giving customers what they believed to be refurbished items and the customers were complaining to Amazon. We were able to identify certain products that he was selling that were and could be listed as new, and those were fine.

For the ones that had to be listed as refurbished, we informed our client about Amazon’s new program called The Amazon Renewed Program, which is a catalog specific to refurbished items. Once he gets those products on that catalog, I’m confident that he will get his account back up right away.

What is Amazon Renewed?

At Amazon Renewed, you can discover and buy pre-owned, refurbished, and open-box products that have been professionally inspected and tested to work and look like new by Amazon-qualified and performance-managed suppliers. The inspection and testing process typically includes a full diagnostic test, replacement of any defective parts, and a thorough cleaning process carried out by the supplier, or by Amazon. The products have no visible cosmetic imperfections when held 12 inches away. The products may be packaged in a generic box and come with the accessories expected for a new product, with exceptions, if any, mentioned on the product detail page.
